Les Pendlebury's Hudson Story

In 1988 my late brother Arthur Pendlebury saw a For Sale add in the W.T.N. for a 1942 Hudson Two Door Brougham with 14,093 original miles on the speedo. As he had just bought out a 1946 Hudson Coupe from the U.S. he rang me and told  he abouth this car , and suggested that I buy it.  At that time I told him I could not afford such a car, he said sell your '35 coupe and buy the '42 , you will never get the chance to buy such a car again in this condition, remember we had never seen this car, just a photo in the W.T.N.

After many sleepless nights, I decided to ring the owner a Mr Hal Waddell who lived in Florida, and ask if the car was still available, to my surprise it was, so a deal was done over the phone to purchase the car.( remember we still had not seen this car.)

In December 1988 I sent Hal a cheque for the car, and arranged for it to be picked up and transported to Australia. In May 1989 Hal rang to ask when I was going to organise to get the car picked up, as he was going away and would like the car to be picked up before he went away. I told him to my knowledge the car was well on it's way to Sydney Australia, he said no that it was still in his garage, after several calls to the shipping company they told me they had Forgotten to pick it up, it finally arrived in Sydney July 1989.some six months later after purchase.

On arrival at the container terminal where we had to pick up the car, we were directed to a large shed, and inside was this immaculate 1942 Hudson Two Door Brougham. Arthur looked at me and said that's not your car, it looks to good, we never expected in our wildest dreams that the car would be in such good condition.

The original owner was from Long Island New York, he bought the car in early 1942, he was called up for military Service in WW11, after having driven the car for only 7,000 miles, he did not return was killed in action, and as his widow did not drive, the car remained in the garage until her death about 1972. The car was then sold to a Mr Mike Olson he also lived Long Island New York, he added another 4,000 odd miles to the speedo.  Hal Waddell purchased the car from him in April 1972 over the phone, met Mike in Front Royal a few weeks later and drove the car home some 900 miles, the car was driven to meets for four or five years and then was retired to Hal's private museum.  In the early 80's Hal had the car stripped to bare metal and resprayed due to the paint wearing thin, it was painted with five coats of lacquer and two coats of clear. In the last 10 years Hal owned the car he only added 100 miles to the speedo.  The car still has the original number plate on the front, two petrol rationing stickers on the windscreen, the car still has the original upholstery, front floor mat etc.and still has that Hudson smell.

Since owning the car, we have won MANY trophies at multi make car shows, it would be one of the most original cars in Australia, never had any rust, or ever been damaged in an accident, the car now has 21,678 miles on the speedo, the cylinder head has never been removed, and does not use an ounce of oil between changes.

To my knowledge, it is the only 1942 Hudson 21 Series Two Door Brougham left in the world. ( Can anyone verify this ?)
